International background check companies, and why any top 10 background check companies list is a list of local partner networks
A provider offering worldwide background checks is describing a network of local partners and in-country processes, not a database it can query. That distinction decides everything about how you should evaluate one: what matters is which countries it genuinely reaches, by what channel, and how honest it is about the ones it cannot.

How to evaluate an international screening provider
- Give them your actual country list first. Not a hypothetical global footprint. Ask for coverage, method and realistic turnaround for each specific country you hire in, because a provider strong in one region is often weak in another.
- Ask which countries it cannot serve. The honest answer is never none. Some countries release criminal records only to the individual, some require in-country requests, and a few make no record available for employment purposes at all. A provider that says it covers everywhere is not describing reality.
- Ask how data protection is handled. In the EU and UK criminal conviction data has special status and generally needs a legal basis in domestic law rather than consent alone, and transfers out have their own requirements. Ask which local entity processes the data and on what basis.
- Price the verification half separately. Education and employment verification internationally is often more informative than the criminal search and usually faster, because it depends on institutions rather than state record channels. It is frequently the better spend.
Why there is no shortcut
Every country holds its own criminal records under its own rules and releases them through its own channel. Some issue a certificate only to the individual, who must apply personally and hand it over, which makes your timeline dependent on the candidate and on a government backlog. Others allow an authorised third party to request with consent. Several require the request in-country, in the local language, or notarised and apostilled.
That is why turnaround is measured in weeks rather than days and why a single global price is rarely meaningful. An international provider's real product is relationships and process knowledge in each jurisdiction, and the useful question is which jurisdictions rather than how many.
What a top ten list is actually ranking
Ranked lists of background check companies are ranking marketing presence, and this site does not publish one. What can be compared is what each provider was willing to put in writing when its own pages were read. Of the twenty-five providers in this record, five publish a price at all, with advertised entry packages from $29.00 to $39.99 a report and a median of $29.99, and twenty keep a live pricing page carrying no figure.
For international work that split is even less informative, because none of the published prices covers international searching. Every provider quotes that per country, so the comparison has to be built from your own country list rather than read off a table.
Where to spend the effort
For most international hires, verifying that the degree was awarded and the employers existed answers more of the actual risk than a criminal certificate obtained six weeks later. Those verifications depend on universities and companies rather than state channels, so they are usually faster and often more revealing.
Sanctions and watchlist screening is fast, cheap and genuinely global, because the lists are published. Identity document verification with international document coverage is straightforward. Build the programme from those, and treat the country-by-country criminal search as the slow specialist element it is.
Questions buyers ask before they order
- Is there a worldwide criminal records database?
- No. Every country holds its own records under its own rules and channels, so an international provider is a network of local partners and in-country processes rather than a database.
- How long does an international check take?
- Weeks rather than days, and longer where the individual must obtain the certificate personally. Build the timeline before the offer rather than after it.
- Which international checks are worth doing first?
- Education and employment verification, plus sanctions and watchlist screening and document verification. Those are faster and often answer more of the real risk than a slow criminal certificate.
- Do published prices cover international searching?
- No. The five providers here that publish a rate publish it for domestic record searches. International work is quoted per country by every provider.
