Background check services for small businesses: which background check companies for small businesses and small business background check services publish a price, and what the best background check for small business and best background check companies for small businesses actually means
The screening market splits almost perfectly along the line a small employer cares about: providers that publish a price and providers that make you book a call. Twenty of the twenty-five on this site do the second. That is not a judgement about quality, it is a description of who they sell to, and knowing which side a provider sits on saves a small business a week of discovery calls that were never going to end in a usable number.

How a small employer should buy screening
- Start with the providers that print a rate. A published price is a real starting point and a negotiating anchor. Advertised entry packages among the five that publish run from $29.00 to $39.99 a report, with a median of $29.99, and every one of those pages says starting.
- Ask for a worked example, not a rate card. One candidate, three counties over seven years, two employment verifications. The number that comes back is comparable across providers in a way an entry price is not, and it is what your first invoice will look like.
- Buy the searches the role needs and no more. An unnecessary search costs money and creates information you then have to handle lawfully. Credit checks in particular are restricted by several states to specific job types and are rarely justified for a general hire.
- Get the three FCRA documents in place before the first order. A standalone disclosure, a written authorisation, and pre-adverse and adverse action templates. Providers supply these; the legal duty to use them properly stays with you, and there is no small-employer exemption.
Why the enterprise providers will not quote you quickly
HireRight, Sterling, First Advantage, Accurate, Cisive and their peers all keep live pricing pages with no figure on them. They sell annual programmes priced against hiring volume, search mix and integration into an applicant tracking system, and a headline rate would genuinely misdescribe that. For an employer hiring hundreds of people a year those conversations are worth having.
For an employer hiring four people a year they usually are not. You will spend the time to discover that the minimum commitment does not fit, and you will have learned nothing you could not have read on a pricing page. The published-price providers exist precisely because that segment needed to be buyable without a salesperson.
What best actually means here
There is no best background check company in the abstract and this site does not rank one. What can be compared is what each provider was willing to put in writing: its price, if it publishes one, and what its entry package searches. Beyond that the useful criteria for a small employer are how the adverse action workflow works, whether county searches are included or added per county, and how quickly a real support question gets a real answer.
Two of the five published prices on this site are for social media screening rather than criminal search, which is worth catching before you compare them. Ferretly at $29.00 a report and Fama at $34.99 are answering a different question from a county criminal search, and reading either as the cheapest background check available would be a mistake.
The mistake that generates the lawsuits
The FCRA requires the disclosure that a consumer report may be obtained for employment purposes to be clear, conspicuous, in writing, and in a document consisting solely of that disclosure. Folding it into an application form or an onboarding pack is the single most litigated error in employment screening, and small employers make it more often than large ones because nobody owns the paperwork.
The second most common is skipping the pre-adverse action step: sending a rejection because of a report without first sending the candidate a copy of it, the Summary of Your Rights, and a reasonable period to dispute what it says. Both errors are free to avoid and expensive to make.
Questions buyers ask before they order
- What is the cheapest background check for a small business?
- Among providers that publish a rate, advertised entry packages start at $29.00 a report and the median is $29.99. Two of the published figures are for social media screening rather than criminal search, so compare what the package actually includes.
- Do small businesses have to follow the FCRA?
- Yes, from the first hire. There is no small-employer exemption from the standalone disclosure, the written authorisation or the adverse action sequence.
- Should a small business use an enterprise provider?
- Usually not at first. They price annual programmes against volume and integration work and will not quote quickly. The published-price providers are designed to be bought without a sales process.
- How many providers publish a price?
- Five of the twenty-five on this site. The other twenty keep a live pricing page carrying no figure, which is recorded here with the page and the date it was read.
