Why this site exists
A background check is one of the few business purchases where almost nobody prints a number. Of the twenty-five providers on this site, five publish a rate and twenty want a discovery call first. There is a real reason for that, because a screening bill moves with the searches ordered, the counties they run in and the volume behind them. There is also a cost to it, which lands on the small employer who needs three comparable numbers and cannot get one without losing a week. This site does the part that can be done in public: it reads each provider's own pages, quotes the figures they are willing to print, and records just as carefully where a provider prints nothing. The second column is most of the market, and knowing which calls you can skip is worth as much as the prices.
Who it is for
The owner, hiring manager or HR lead at a US business that has decided to screen its hires and wants to know who sells the checks and what they cost.
The landlord or property manager screening rental applicants, who needs a tenant screening report and has to stay inside the FCRA while getting one.
The compliance or operations lead who owns a drug testing, MVR or DOT programme and is putting it out to quote.
The recruiter or staffing agency running checks at volume, for whom the per-check price and the turnaround are the whole decision.
What it does not do
- It will not help you run a background check on a private individual, look yourself up, or find out whether an old conviction still shows. There is no permissible purpose under the FCRA for most of that, the providers listed here would refuse it too, and it is the boundary that lets an employment screening comparison exist at all.
- It does not run, resell or broker a background check, hold or return anybody's consumer report, or publish anything about a named individual. It is not a consumer reporting agency.
- It does not rank a best provider. There is no best background check company in the abstract, so the record shows what each provider was willing to put in writing and leaves the choosing to you.
- It gives no legal advice. FCRA duties, state screening law and DOT testing rules bind you directly as the employer or landlord ordering the check.
