Social media screening is the one search where doing it yourself is more dangerous than paying somebody. An employer who looks at a candidate's profiles sees protected characteristics it can never unsee and cannot prove it ignored. A compliant provider is built to filter those out before anything reaches you, which is the whole product. This page explains the difference and what it costs.

Why the do-it-yourself version is the risky one

A public profile typically reveals race, religion, national origin, age, disability, pregnancy, sexual orientation and political affiliation within a few seconds of scrolling. Once a hiring manager has seen it, the employer is in the position of asserting that none of it influenced the decision, with a screenshot-free record and a candidate who can point to what was visible. That is a much weaker position than never having looked. Doing the search through a provider that reports only defined categories of concerning conduct puts a filter between the profile and the decision-maker.

What a compliant provider reports

Providers in this space report against defined categories such as violent or threatening content, sexually explicit material, demonstrable bigotry and illegal activity, and they suppress protected characteristics rather than passing them through. When performed for employment purposes by a consumer reporting agency, the result is a consumer report and the full FCRA framework applies: standalone disclosure, written authorisation, and the pre-adverse and adverse action sequence if you act on it. Providers that sell this as research rather than as a consumer report are selling you the problem back.

The published prices here

Two of the five published prices in this hub's record are for social media screening. Ferretly publishes a Professional tier starting at $29.00 USD per report and Fama publishes $34.99 for an Essential report, both quoted from their own pages. Those sit at the bottom of this record's price table, which is worth reading carefully: they are the cheapest products here because they are a narrow supplementary search, not because they are a cheap way to buy a criminal background check. The two answer entirely different questions.

Monitoring existing employees is a different decision

Continuing social media monitoring of current staff raises questions a pre-hire check does not: several states restrict employers from requiring access to personal accounts, protected concerted activity under labour law includes a good deal of employee speech about working conditions, and off-duty conduct statutes in some states limit what you may act on. Influencer vetting sits in the same family but is usually a brand risk assessment rather than an employment decision, and where the person is not an employee or applicant the FCRA framework may not apply at all, which changes what you may lawfully do rather than making it a free-for-all.

Questions people ask about social media screening

Can I just look at a candidate's social media myself?

You can, and it is the riskier route. You will see protected characteristics you cannot unsee and cannot prove you ignored. A provider that filters those out before anything reaches you is the point of the product.

Is a social media check a consumer report?

When performed for employment purposes by a consumer reporting agency, yes, with the full FCRA framework: standalone disclosure, written authorisation and the adverse action sequence.

How much does social media screening cost?

Two providers in this record publish a rate: Ferretly from $29.00 a report and Fama at $34.99 for an Essential report, quoted from their own pages. Both are narrow supplementary searches rather than criminal background checks.

Can I monitor employees' social media?

It is more constrained than pre-hire screening. Several states restrict requiring access to personal accounts, labour law protects concerted activity about working conditions, and some states limit action on lawful off-duty conduct.
